...and we are off...Term 3 has begun!

We have had a very busy start to the term. We have a group of students visiting us for just over two weeks from South Korea. These students are buddied up with our year 8 students going to the Gold Coast.

Projects
The first week of our projects have seen teams planning how they will achieve their goals by the end of week 4. In the coming week, families will be emailed initial project maps.  Our projects will take about 4 weeks to complete.  We will invite families in week 5 to see these, further information will be available closer to the date.

Location Location LocationBy Jake

We decided to create a location board for LC3 to show where all the students are, so the teachers know where we are and can get us if they need. It also keeps us safe.

Why is a Location Board important? It’s important that everyone in the common can be found if they are needed or if there is some kind of emergency.

A location board is a way for the LAs to tell where all the students are. It’s a big wooden board with all the spaces in the school along with every students name on a moveable card with velcro on the back so that it can be stuck next to pictures of the different spaces.

How did we make the Location Board? I was away for a big part of the building process, but what I do know is my group stuck velcro to the back of the pictures and the names and then we stuck velcro onto the wooden board permanently.

Who made the Location Board? Ben, Jake, Harrison, Bailey, Josiah and Callan.

Where will you find the Location Board? You will find the Location board in Hobsonville Point Primary School LC3 NZ.

Discovery writing By Maia

Discovery writing is a place kids can share and write stories. Discovery writing is on everyday. Monday we get a topic and we have to plan for Friday. On Friday we do our iWrite and we get 20 - 30 minutes to write on our topic.

Discovery writers do fun games and activities like punctuation and grammar and write stories like we're doing right now the report. We do other stories like online stories we do is work on our spelling. We learn how to write stories properly and then we learn how to write TV commercials. We learn how to write scripts and learn how to write reports. We learn how to write everything pretty much. Discovery writing is run by Amy all over LC3 sometimes, we even write on the playground only if we're lucky.

End of Term 2

Projects
We are now moving into the project phase of our learning. All students have selected a project to be part of.  We have started the initial planning (see below for the planning format) and these have been shared with students.  Next term, we will be kicking these off.
Example of our project planning map
Some students are building and sewing. If you (or anyone you know) have expertise in these areas and are available to help, please get in touch with the LC3 learning advisors.

In an effort to connect schools around New Zealand, some of LC3 recently had the opportunity to take part in a mystery skype activity. This involved one country school, and one city school connecting through a skype conversation. The students had to use teamwork, problem-solving, and research skills to figure out where in New Zealand the other school was through asking yes or no questions. The students worked in certain roles within the team to ensure there were some researchers, communicators, reporters, and some question masters.

On Wednesday, sixth of July 2016, some 20 people were chosen to become the amazing legendary skypers! Even though the connection was horrible, the most challenging part was probably trying to communicate with our team, because there were so many people saying things at different times. The fun bit was when they asked if we were a new school, and everyone thought we were doomed! And then we located the Chatham Island. Since there were only three schools there, we managed to find out that their school was Te One. After we guessed their school, we let them continue guessing, and they soon realised that our school was Hobsonville Point Primary. We then started asking questions about what life is like living in the country, and random questions like, “Do you know how to dab?” and “Can you do the running man?” We gave them a tour of our school and introduced the LAs.

Farwell Jaimee & Mandeep
We farewell Jaimee Poihipi and her family who are sadly leaving us and moving to Hamilton.  We have enjoyed having Jaimee as part of our learning family and wish you all the best for the future. Thanks to everyone for your contributions today and to Nelle and Jacinda who organised a lovely send off for the last day of term.

We also farewelled Mandeep who has been a fabulous helper from getting balls off the roof to constructing skate ramps.  He is always so willing to offer great advice and to help out.
