Immersion Block 3: Changes

We have started our new concept for this block of learning. We are looking at Effective Communication through the context of change.

Some of the big questions that will drive our learning are:
  • How important is change?
  • Can kindness change the world?
  • Can one person change the world?
Last week we introduced the concept, discussing the changes that are just around the corner (e.g. changing learning commons, schools, friends, etc).

This week our students will understand that to manage change they develop knowledge, understandings, skills and attitudes to maintain and enhance personal well-being and physical development.  Today each LC3 student became a "parent" adopting an egg for the week. We are looking into responsibility and taking care of something greater than ourselves. Already we have had some interesting parenting styles. Check out the pictures from this morning:

Over the week we will be looking at different aspects of responsibility. On Friday we will be having the Nest team come and lead the positive puberty sessions. This will be a full day programme (year 5 & 6's together and the year 7 & 8's together) however, for parts of the day the girls and boys will be separated.

Sharing our Projects

Today LC3 & 4 shared their Inventive Thinking projects and the process they have gone through to complete these.  It was great to be able to share these with family members who were able to make it. The kids were really nervous beforehand, but with all the fabulous feedback, loved the experience.

Below are some pictures from today.  Each student has documented the process online, so feel free t ask your child to share this with you.

Term 3...busy, busy, busy

Trust License
Next week students will be issued a trust license. We have co-constructed what this will look like with the students. We have three levels of license - learner - restricted - full. With each license, students are given different permissions around the learning common and school. Students have identified which license they feel they should be awarded and together with their LA's, these will be given out next week.

Projects
We are well underway with our class projects. All students are working in a group and will be finished in the next couple of weeks.  We will send out details closer to the time for you to come and see the process they have undertaken and the finished products.

Persuasive Language
Most Literacy groups are going to be focussing on persuasive language for both reading and writing. Be prepared for some persuasive conversations coming your way!

Lights Out...Power Out!
By Darroch
On Wednesday the world nearly ended, the power went out in the school. No internet, no air conditioner. Horrible I know, but in our hours of dire need a teacher/hero rose and made us do school work that didn’t require power. Amy (the Hero) got us try and sell a product written on a piece of paper which was really fun. Next, she got us choose a side so we could debate it, also really fun. Finally, we got  into teams and were given a side and a debate, we had 20 mins to write a debate and debated our point against another team. All and all Wednesday was great and I hope it happens again.

Masterchef
By Chanel

Last week we had our first round of MasterCheferchef 2016. Masterchef is a cooking competition where groups of 4 get together to come up with a recipe and cook it in the short amount of time given. In this years MasterChef competition there are 8 teams of 4 competing. All 8 teams are split into two groups so group 1, 3, 5, and 7 would compete in week one then groups 2, 4, 6 and 8 would compete in week two and so on. Each week the groups are given a different challenge, there are challenges such as  limited budgets or limited ingredients every week the groups will have something new to challenge them. All the groups are judged on 4 important things: teamwork, cleanliness, presentation and taste. All of the teams have to find a recipe that will meet the expectations of the judges and the challenge set for them.

...and we are off...Term 3 has begun!

We have had a very busy start to the term. We have a group of students visiting us for just over two weeks from South Korea. These students are buddied up with our year 8 students going to the Gold Coast.

Projects
The first week of our projects have seen teams planning how they will achieve their goals by the end of week 4. In the coming week, families will be emailed initial project maps.  Our projects will take about 4 weeks to complete.  We will invite families in week 5 to see these, further information will be available closer to the date.

Location Location LocationBy Jake

We decided to create a location board for LC3 to show where all the students are, so the teachers know where we are and can get us if they need. It also keeps us safe.

Why is a Location Board important? It’s important that everyone in the common can be found if they are needed or if there is some kind of emergency.

A location board is a way for the LAs to tell where all the students are. It’s a big wooden board with all the spaces in the school along with every students name on a moveable card with velcro on the back so that it can be stuck next to pictures of the different spaces.

How did we make the Location Board? I was away for a big part of the building process, but what I do know is my group stuck velcro to the back of the pictures and the names and then we stuck velcro onto the wooden board permanently.

Who made the Location Board? Ben, Jake, Harrison, Bailey, Josiah and Callan.

Where will you find the Location Board? You will find the Location board in Hobsonville Point Primary School LC3 NZ.

Discovery writing By Maia

Discovery writing is a place kids can share and write stories. Discovery writing is on everyday. Monday we get a topic and we have to plan for Friday. On Friday we do our iWrite and we get 20 - 30 minutes to write on our topic.

Discovery writers do fun games and activities like punctuation and grammar and write stories like we're doing right now the report. We do other stories like online stories we do is work on our spelling. We learn how to write stories properly and then we learn how to write TV commercials. We learn how to write scripts and learn how to write reports. We learn how to write everything pretty much. Discovery writing is run by Amy all over LC3 sometimes, we even write on the playground only if we're lucky.
